We drove to Alnwick Castle. It's located about 35 miles north of Newcastle. Foolishly I thought I could just put "Alnwick Castle" into Google Maps. That didn't work so well. It's best to use the postcode NE66 1YU, which will take you directly to the parking lot. It's £3 to park for the whole day, but you will need to pay in cash

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone filmed on location at Alnwick Castle in autumn 2000. The following year, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (the second film in the series) used Alnwick Castle for shooting. The Outer Bailey is recognisable as the area where Harry and his fellow students learned to fly broomsticks with Madam Hooch.

However, the castle viewed from the outside, is a dominant feature in its elevated position overlooking the River Aln. Forget about it being a filming location for Harry Potter, Downton Abbey, etc. this is quite simply a stunningly beautiful castle that is over 800 years old. Visited March 2023. The castle boasts numerous defences, including 2-meter-thick walls, a 7-meter deep moat, two baileys, and thick oak gates. Anthony Salvin restored the exterior medieval castle in the mid-19th century, and it is today one of the finest in Britain.Lavish staterooms with an excellent collection of old Italian masters and sculptures are available inside Alnwick Castle.

The Alnwick castle is spectacular, of course, but there is something magical and quite breathtaking about the wee little towns like Kelso or the coast scenery of Northumberland. 10/10. I would take this tour everyday if I had the chance. But for the meantime, I'll remember it fondly. Thanks a lot, Jim!
